Manicure for boys

Lots of duties have to be carried out on such a polar bear day. Of course I prefer the ones which I can combine with something pleasant. As you can see, I'm getting ready for spring tiredness. And in the process I prepare my paws for the adventure.

When I get bigger only Papi - at the utmost - will be allowed to touch my nails. The big collegues receive some deep sleep for their nail care, but I actually sleep enough. I'd even hold still for a few goodies.

i'd like to add that the link from "deep sleep" goes to an article about nail care for animals, it mentions that bears (among other animals at zoos) are anesthetized in order to take care of their nails, and apes even paint their nails when given color!!!!

toll machst du das knuti, wie ein grosser. hab irgendwo gelesen dass deine kumpels in der arktis das ganz genau nehmen mit der tatzenpflege, da sie ja den ganzen tag auf dem kalten eis und schnee rumlaufen, und besonders nach dem essen ist es wohl wichtig, wieder saubere pfötchen zu haben. aber dir brauch ich das ja nicht erklären.

@Admins: Saaaagt mal, wäre es möglich, dass Ihr Euch von der Abendschau nen Tipp geben lasst wenn es wieder einen Beitrag über Knut gibt, und dann hier einen kurzen Hinweis postet sobald Ihr es wisst? Wir gucken die Abendschau zwar eh meistens wenn wir zu hause sind, aber ab und an verpasst man ja doch eine und könnte dann programmieren...

Das wäre super.. :)

Hello, Wild Herd! I love the new video of our boy, Knuti. He is grooming his paws like a kittie! I told Al about it and he said he didn't know icebearboys did that! I told him apparently they did. Liz was unimpressed....she's like that....

And that sweet baby, Flocke--sucking on her stuffed animal--oh, that poor baby needs a TD whose finger she can suckle...She is so adorable--that belly full of milk and her purring....oh, my....I wonder if I can volunteer to be a polar bear social worker....I could travel around Germany and nurse iceabearbabies and give therapy to psychotic icebearboys.....Just a thought.....

P.S.: So, I'll put in my two cents about the extraordinary relationship between TD and Knuti. It is PURE. That's the word that comes to mind along with all the beautiful words already said about it. Nothing has come between them--not the wide world, not the media, not even Dr. B. Nothing has diluted the PURE love between them--it is so beautiful to behold. I know it was a magical year and we won't see them together again--it's a loss that we struggle with. But we do have our memories, wonderful pictures, and the continuing saga of the bear and his Papi......That's a long P.S., isn't it? Love to all, k-j

Describing your process of writing, you have used several times the expression “therapy”. Your latest installment mirrors this process of pain, release and liberation which is involved in going the path of the past, the way of the roots and the confrontation with something beyond our own limited existence which we have to come to accept first. Thank you for sharing your feelings and visions with us. As you, Eva and Nanook put it today, Knut is for some of us healing and your writing helps to feel it. By the way I didn’t know about Burt Hellinger but came across the information that he is also into systemic family therapy which can be sometimes very helpful in discovering and overcoming paralyzing and (self)destructive patterns by seeing the “big” picture…
Thank you also for your flattering words about the Indian Ocean version of Knut’s Love Story. You are right, it is much fun to see in which different directions we write, and as you I have the feeling of being inter-related all the same. Beary hugs to you with special thanks of Simba!

LOVE STORY

Knut woke up early. He felt refreshed and full of energy. Something was different. The night had been different. But what was it? During his sleep it seemed as if someone had been singing to him. A female voice, a slightly husky voice, strong. Could that be or was he imagining things even in his nights? It was not a simple dream. The melody was still in his head, funny thing. He looked around his mulch and stretched. Everything seemed perfectly normal, the same rain as the days before, for him no problem, on the contrary, moving around his enclosure during this kind of weather would give his fur his personal colored note. People came from all over the world to see him just like that, simply being dirty…Humans… funny species of creatures but he liked them!.. .Nobody up so far but the melody was still in his head, hadn’t vanished, made his body even swing a bit. A song he hadn’t known the evening before he went to sleep, he would have bet on it… Yeah, and now he remembered even the lyrics. It was in German….He couldn’t help but singing it…

When he was finished, he restarted to sing the song again and again, his body now swinging more and more, humming the rhythm with every part of it. He was sure now, he had got the melody right. Wow, what a song. And yes, he wanted the whole world to know it:

YES - KING KNUT WAS ALREADY IN LOVE TOO !!!!

Amazing, all the hardship of his feelings during the last weeks and months vanished with each line. Admittedly, the lyrics didn’t help him to get an idea how to do IT and how to approach the lady of his heart in the first place but he was at least sure that he wanted to do IT! And that was much more than he knew yesterday! He couldn’t help but thinking of Flocke and was wondering if she did know that song as well. A moment or two he was happy that his skin was black as he blushed a bit when thinking again on the rimes. But he was sure now, there would be a time for them, the dark sides of love were over. He wanted to find out all about love, and he wanted to do it not in a hurry. He wanted to be prepared and good for her. He wanted to go for IT, no, much more …for her.He had to know more about himself first.
He took a decision and gripping his mobile, he dialed a number starting with +230.

Thank you for your ice-rink ballad, I had to smile a lot, probably you’ll know why after reading todays addition which was already written yesterday morning; although I had to keep the lyrics in German due to a missing translating-of-rimes-gene in my talent-gene-pool, sorry for that!!! …The lyrics go with a certain Cole Porter song – “Let’s fall in Love” …Hilde Knef sang it 40 years ago in German,…hmmhh, O.K., not exactly like that as there was no Knuti around…she too lived and performed in Las Vegas when not being in Berlin. So beside the awakening of Knut, we have some music revival too… (BTW, Hilde Knef was the one with the suitcase in Berlin ("Ich hab noch einen Koffer in Berlin" (Hi,Mervi!)

die netten Leute von der Abendschau haben mir geschrieben, dass sie selber ja die Knutitis haben und ganz sicher immer wieder Berichte über dich senden werden. Nur halt nicht mehr so bombensicher am Freitag.
Da hilft halt nur immer wieder reinschauen.

Fein, wie Du das machst, Fell- und Nagelpflege. Es wirkt richtig beruhigend auf einen. Hast Du Dir das irgendwann mal bei Muschi im Hof abgeschaut?
Richtig, dass Du nur den "Papa" an Deine Tatzen lässt. Brauchst keine Angst zu haben, den sogenannten Tiefschlaf brauchst Du noch lange nicht. Du hast ja genügend Bäume und Felsen und Deinen Ziehpapa.
Ich wünsche Dir schöne Träume bei Tag und Nacht, schönes Wetter und nur das Beste. Du bist ein Super-Bär!

Knut wurde früh wach. Er fühlte sich erfrischt und war voller Energie. Irgendetwas war anders. Die Nacht war anders gewesen. Aber was war es? In seinem Schlaf hatte es geschienen, als habe jemand in sein Ohr gesungen. Eine weibliche Stimme, eine leicht rauchige, kraftvolle Stimme. War das möglich, oder bildete er sich sogar im Schlaf etwas ein? Es war nicht einfach nur ein Traum gewesen. Die Melodie war noch immer in seinem Kopf - eine merkwürdige Sache. Er schaute sich auf seinem Mulch um und streckte sich. Alles erschien völlig normal; es regnete wie in den Tagen zuvor. Für ihn kein Problem, im Gegenteil, wenn er sich in diesem Wetter in seinem Gehege bewegte, bekam sein Fell eine ganz persönliche farbige Note. Die Leute kamen von überallher, aus der ganzen Welt, um ihn so zu sehen, ihn schmutzig zu sehen … Menschen … Merkwürdige Spezies, aber er mochte sie! Bisher war noch niemand zu sehen, aber die Melodie klang in seinem Kopf, war nicht verschwunden und ließ seinen Körper sogar ein wenig swingen. Ein Lied, das er am Abend zuvor, als er sich schlafen gelegt hatte, noch nicht gekannt hatte. Darauf würde er wetten … Yeah, und nun erinnerte er sich sogar an den Text. Er war in Deutsch … Er konnte nicht anders; er musste das Lied einfach singen:

Als das Lied zu Ende war, sang er es wieder und immer wieder; sein Körper begann zu swingen, stärker und stärker, und er summte den Rhythmus mit jedem Körperteil. Nun war er sich sicher; er hatte die Melodie gut hinbekommen. Wow, was für ein Lied! Er wollte, dass die ganze Welt es erfuhr:

JA - AUCH KING KNUT WAR BEREITS VERLIEBT !!!

Erstaunlich, all die elendiglichen Gefühle, mit denen er sich in den letzten Tagen und Monaten herumgequält hatte, verschwanden mit jeder Zeile. Zugegeben, der Text half ihm nicht dabei, eine Eingebung zu bekommen, wie man ES anstellte, wie man sich der Dame seines Herzens näherte, aber zumindest war er sich sicher, dass er ES tun wollte! Und das war so viel mehr als das, was er gestern gewusst hatte! Er konnte nicht anders, er musste an Flocke denken, und er fragte sich, ob auch sie dieses Lied wohl kannte. Einen Augenblick lang war er froh, eine schwarze Haut zu haben, denn er wurde ein bisschen rot, wenn er über die Reime nachdachte. Doch nun war er sicher: die Zeit für sie beide würde kommen, die dunklen Seiten der Liebe waren vorüber. Er wollte alles über die Liebe herausfinden, und er wollte sich Zeit lassen. Er wollte gut auf sie vorbereitet sein. Er wollte ES anpacken, nein, viel mehr …. für sie. Doch zunächst musste er mehr über sich selbst erfahren.
Er fasste einen Entschluss, nahm sein Handy zur Hand und wählte eine Nummer, die mit +230 begann.

Heute habe ich nicht viel Zeit und daher gibt es nur einen kurzen Bericht. Machte mich zu 9.00 Uhr auf in den Zoo. Knut war noch nicht auf der Anlage, gegen 9.30 Uhr kam TD legte ihm einen Fisch in den Mulch und einen Apfel der ins Wasser geworfen wurde. Dauerte nicht lange bis Knut kam und genüsslich seinen Fisch vertilgte, der Apfel im Wasser interessiert ihn nicht. Fand seinen roten Igelball und am frühen Morgen war die ganze Zeit über rödeln angesagt. Den Gesichtsausdruck dabei zu beobachten war köstlich. Schließlich war der Igelball nicht so groß, also wurde noch Holzwolle darin eingewickelt, damit es besser klappt. Er war ziemlich lange damit beschäftigt und fühlte sich sichtlich wohl dabei, der Blick immer wieder zu den Zuschauern ob auch jeder es sehen kann. Nachdem er sich nun vollkommen verausgabt hatte, überkam ihn die Müdigkeit und es wurde ein kleines Nickerchen gemacht. Schnell noch Max und Moritz besucht, die am toben waren und Mutter keine Ruhe ließen. Anschließend ging es zur Eisbärfütterung die immer wieder schön ist, wenn TD die Fütterung macht. Klein Ernst war nicht auf seiner Anlage zog es sicher vor in der Höhle zu bleiben, na ja das Wetter ging gerade so es war wenigstens trocken. Vom Nilpferdhaus gibt es auch nicht viel zu berichten, man hatte wie immer eine Ruhepause eingelegt. Trotz des kurzen Aufenthalts war der Besuch wieder erfolgreich für mich. Eine schöne Woche für alle die ihre Brötchen verdienen müssen.

KNUTIANS - 20 days of vacation and 20 days of accumulated services, I am without time to read blog and.... my computer of house today was for the "hospital", while I very worked yesterday of day it he opposed to work the night, thinks that as I used very much in vacation it decided to enter of vacation... hihihi, but waits that until the week end everything if arranges. From the video it clearly shows what a well-groomed bear you are and certainly not disheveled, unlike some of your visitors :-) I could watch you day in, day out cleaning your paws and claws (or is it called nails on a well-groomed sweetie like you …), you look so cute and there’s something mentally relaxing about it! Spring tiredness – it sounds as if you’re even looking forward to what you call the event! But Knuti, there’s not much event & fun about Spring tiredness and you wouldn’t feel like doing anything at all, perhaps not even eat! Hmm … actually I think you already had a sign of Spring tiredness the other day, when we saw the Photo-Aunties’ "shots" of you sleeping, sleeping and sleeping :-) Take care, sweet Knut!

Ich kann Gudrun da nur beipflichten. Auch wenn in 2 Tagen für mich wieder der Ernst des Lebens beginnt so freue ich mich, wenn ich abends in diesen unterhaltsamen Blog reinschauen und mich mit gleichgesinnten über Knuti ausstauschen kann , irgendwie fällt dann automatisch der ganze Stress des Tages weg :-)

Einerseits denke ich oft (wenn ich die tollen Photos hier sehe): das muß ja so einen Spaß machen, ich würde es gern einmla versuchen - andererseits: ich wende einer Sache auch gern meine ungeteilte Aufmerksamkeit zu ... etwas sehen, so wie es jetzt ist - und nur im Gedächtnis bewahren. -
Ein schwieriges Problem...

wenn wir Eure feinen Gemälde von Hoheit betrachten und den bunten Berichte vom Hofe lesen.....dann müssen wir doch sehr an uns halten ,um nicht die contenance zu verlieren und das Riechsalze zu Hilfe zu nehmen ...Mon Dieu !
Was erlaubet sich Hoheit ....und das vor aller Augen !

Nun, wir werden mit Königin Lisa beraten ,was zu tun sei ,um Hoheit zu beruhigen und auf andere Gedanken zu bringen.
Wir müssen auch den Hoflehrer wieder mehr in die Pflicht nehmen ,damit Majestät nicht länger den Müßiggang pfleget ,sondern sich wieder der Geistes-und Körperübungen befleissigt....dann werden die wirren Gedanken bald verfliegen...!

Uns dünket, der milde Winter wecket bereits vorzeitig Frühlingsgefühle bei unserer kleinen Hoheit .....incroyable!
Denn - sehet nur seinen Papa , König Lars....der schon heftigst mit Königin Tosca innige Blicke tauschet ,sie mit galanten Wassertänzen verführet und stolz wie Casanova die Sonne geniesset .......!!

Majestät darf sich daran kein Beispiel nehmen und Anlass für dummes Geschwätz bieten.... sondern muss lernen , in allem fein Maß zu halten ...und schicklich zu warten .....bien sur !
bis die Zeit kommet ,eine liebreizende princesse zu umwerben und ihr mit noblesse den Hof zu machen....n`est ce pas ,liebe Gräfin ?

jetzt wird es aber allerhöchste Zeit, daß ich Dir mal wieder einen Brief schreibe! Ich möchte mich ganz tüchtig bedanken für Deine schönen Beiträge und Videos der letzten Woche. Du bist ein ganz fleißiges Bärchen - ja, okeee, auch gemütlich, viel schlafen und ausruhen, rumliegen, futtern..... Fein, daß Du uns immer so schön teilhaben läßt an Deinem Alltag, wie z. B. beim Waschtag: Also, bei Dir macht waschen und putzen ja richtig Spaß, da mag man ja gerne wieder von vorne anfangen, ganz im Gegensatz zu mir, hehe. Erstens weiß ich auch nie, wo ich anfangen soll und dann bin ich froh, wenn ich fertig bin. Ich sach´ Dir was, Knuti, sei froh, daß Dein Eisbärfell und Jutesack so pflegeleicht sind und den einfachen Hauptwaschgang überstehen, aber mal ehrlich, für Dein Fell hast Du doch bestimmt ein bißchen Wäscheweiß benutzt, oder;)? Übrigens, so große Waschmaschinen wie Du haben wir zwar nicht, aber manchmal muß ich in meine auch mal reintauchen, auf der Suche nach der ominösen zweiten Socke, aber glaub´ mir, das sieht auf keinen Fall so süß aus wie bei Dir, hihi.... Und wenn man so viel arbeitet, muß man auch ordentlich essen, also laß´ Dich bloß nicht mit nur einem Fisch abspeisen! Ich bin Deiner Meinung, Sport ohne Sinn macht keinen Sinn, darum finde ich es wie Du total gut, den, ich meine, DIE Fische aus dem Wasser zu fischen, denn Fisch muß schwimmen und darf auch naß sein, und das In´s-Wasser-Reinhopsen ist dann auch genug Sport, äh, Bewegung, ähm, ich meine, najaa..... oder;)?

Lieber Knuti, ich bin ja so mächtig stolz auf Dich, daß Du dem kleinen Flöckchen ein bißchen unter die Tätzchen greifen willst, da kann sie echt froh sein, denn Deine Tips und Erfahrungen kann sie tierisch gut gebrauchen. Jajaa, wenn man schon so ein erfahrener kleiner großer Eisbärjunge ist.....dann kann man was erzählen. Und Du hast den besten Papi der Welt:), der hat Dir Baumhäuser und Hängematten gebaut! Völlig klar, daß Du Flocke-Bärchen nicht vergessen kannst, eh, Moment mal, das kommt mir so bekannt vor, da war doch mal....so klein warst Du auch mal, vor einem Jahr, und als wir Dich das erste Mal sahen.....groooße Liebe:))!! Ich glaube, Flocke freut sich, daß Du ihr „Lektionen erteilst“, wie mit den Schuhen: Da kann sie ihre Zähnchen – wenn dann mal welche da sind;):) – dran testen, wie Du bei Papi, weißt Du noch? „An den Schuhen meines Papis“, hehe, die waren damals noch größer als Du:). Jetzt bin ich aber schon sehr auf Lektion 2 gespannt, was könnte das wohl sein? Vielleicht....hmmmm, tjaaa...aber das überlaß´ ich Dir, denn Du kennst Dich da am besten aus:). „Dieses war der erste Streich, doch der zweite folgt sogleich“....;)

So, mein Bärchen, jetzt will ich noch mal eben Deinen Admins sagen, daß ich es gaaanz großartig finde, daß sie Flocke´s Blogg mit in´s Blogroll übernommen haben:)! Das ist praktisch, so Tür an Tür, da kann man zwischendurch mal „Tach“ sagen und schauen, was „drüben“ so los ist:). Und Du schlaf´ gut, von der Winterruhe in die Frühjahrsmüdigkeit, aber halt, nicht so eilig, noch ist es nicht soweit, denn ich habe eine gute Nachricht für Dich: Wie ich gehört habe, soll der Winter sich doch noch blicken lassen, juchuu! Aber es kann nicht schaden, jetzt schon mit der Tatzenpflege zu beginnen, damit Du sie dann im Frühjahr vorzeigen kannst, ohne Schuhe;). Dein „Wellness“-Video anzuschauen ist pure Wellness für uns:)!

Thanks so much for posting the link to that video. The final statement really sums it up: "We lose a lot when we lose that bear". I wish all media outlets would broadcast this report, increase awareness: definitely send it to those decision maker who are delaying putting the bears on the protected list. I also loved the hands-on exhibit at the zoo: kids could touch pb fur, see how big the jaw is, etc. This is where the Berlin Zoo officials missed the boat, I think. Why not educate the public at the same time?

Personally I am resigned that I am doomed: polar bear fever it is, coupled with severe Knutitis, and thankfully no cure in sight. Just today we were spoiled again with more amazing photos, and when I see baby Flocke's videos, all I can think is HOLY COW :)

So Nene, Gudrun, Liesel, Christina M., THANKS for keeping my symptoms going.

Dear Betsy!
Don’t think too much...this is the only recommendation I can give you. Do it the way YOU need it to be done, that’s all. It will be right then. Everybody else can cope with it, whatever name you pick, don’t you worry too much.

When I read about your conflicting identities, your fear that you might be only creative when writing under your pseudonym, my heart went out to you as I can understand you so much. You are a very gifted person and you will continue to write. As you made it clear very soon that this story is also about you, I can understand that you felt the need to disclose your name at this very point of the story as it is part of your own process of healing… which is -just to close the circle- about the integration of conflicting aspects of our identities. Take your time, the words will come and with them the urge to let them flow and to bring them in a form to share them. We are here and will be there then. Knut as the main well of inspiration will make it easy to continue, I’m pretty sure of it as this little fellow together with his special friends and followers has kept me writing since my first days I discovered this blog. And I must admit: Simba has been very often very helpful. As Birgit some of my stories wouldn’t have been possible. It would lead too far now, I hope we find another moment one day to exchange views on writing and what it means to us and how this unique place has contributed to find this part of our identity.
I am looking forward to new installments by Betsy the StoryStarter or whoever….

BTW, your words about love as obsession and fixation rang some interesting bells.... Thanks for putting it so simple and clear. It was helpful and very cleverly observed.

This beautiful story reminds me of a "sabian symbol' in astrology, which reads "a council of ancestors stands behind its young leader", and the keynote is 'the root foundation of past performances which power and sustain whatever decision is made in crisis by an individual.' This little story in much more profound than it appears. But for certain. "YOu have everything you will ever need right inside you." What a journey it is!

ja, das mit dem auslöser und ausschaltknopf passiert nicht nur dir ;o) und ich hab mich ganz oft dabei ertappt, zu denken "hoffentlich macht knut jetzt gleich dies oder das, damit ich es fotografieren kann". und das ist das totale gegenteil von meiner sonstigen "knut-meditation"!

Hallo Nanni aus NRW,

ich bin Nanni aus Niedersachsen (Nähe Bremerhaven) und habe bis Mitte Dezember auch öfter im Blog geschrieben. Leider herrscht bezüglich meiner Arbeit im Winter Hochbetrieb und so hoffe ich, im März oder April wieder mehr Zeit für den Blog und für einen Knutbesuch zu haben.

Deinem Beitrag kann ich mich nur anschließen. Knut ist und bleibt die Nr. 1. Und wenn der RBB Knutbeiträge reduziert oder ganz einstellt, so baue ich auf die Berliner Knutfans inkl. Admins, damit die Zeit zwischen den Zoobesuchen nicht so lange wird und ich sehen kann, wie aus Knut ein stattlicher Eisbärmann wird.

Ganz liebe Grüße an alle Knutianer und natürlich an die Hauptperson Knut. Das mit der Krallenpflege erkläre ich mal meinen Katzen, die halten das zur Zeit nicht für nötig und verteilen die Matschpfoten überall.

Viellen, vielen Dank für die tollen Fotos von: natürlich Knuti und dem Eisbrecher Lars und the Ladies. Einfach toll. Ich wußte vorher nicht, wie geschickt Eisbrären mit Ihren Tatzen umgehen können. Aber auch wie beeinduckend diese Bärentatzen sind. Wow!!!

Vielen lieben Dank für Eure schönen Fotos von Samstag und gestern! Sie sind auch so "farb-harmonisch";). Ich finde auch, Knuti´s Fell ist besonders schön und fluffig und paßt so gut "Ton in Ton" zur Holzwolle, seinem Jutesack und dem Didgeridoo:).

Wie kann es bloss sein, dass dem Vorstand die Animositäten eines einzelnen Herrn wichtiger sind, als die nackten Fakten und Zahlen?

Was für echte Argumente gegen Uhlich konnten denn vorgebracht werden oder reichen tatsächlich plakativen Schlagwörtern wie „Disneyland“, „Zirkus“ und „Rummel“ aus, um den Mann auf die Strasse zu setzen, der dem Zoo erstmals schwarze Zahlen verschafft hat?

Also ich kapier nicht, wie jener Herr sich in so kurzer Zeit solch eine unantastbare Position verschaffen konnte und niemand hinzuschauen scheint. Hat der Vorstand lieber einen Zoo anno 1844 als ein modernes Unternehmen? Nimmt man lieber Subventionen an, statt aus eigener Kraft wirtschaftlich erfolgreich zu sein?

Falls mir das jemand erklären kann, bin ich sehr dankbar.

Möchte Euch auf eine Fernsehsendung aufmerksam machen, heute 14.30 Uhr im MDR. LexiTv Wissen für alle, Thema Eisbären. Wie geht es Knut heute und Eisbären in der Arktis.
Ich möchte mich für alle Berichte, Fotos, Gedichte und Geschichten bedanken. Da ich Resturlaub auf dem Land verbringe, habe ich wieder kaum Gelegenheit, alles zu verfolgen.
